Emergency Response

Centerville ISD Emergency Response Information

Providing a safe learning environment is Centerville ISD’s top priority. Centerville ISD has adopted the Standard Resonse Protocol (SRP), which provides a formal response to school-based emergencies. This SRP is designed to help everyone involved communicate and respond effectively during critical incidents.

About Standard Response Protocol

The Standard Response Protocol was developed by the “I Love U Guys Foundation,”to help ensure student safety in educational settings. The SRP has been endorsed by the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC), the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and the office of the Governor of the State of Texas. For more information about the foundation please visit their website: I Love U Guys Foundation.

Practice Drills and Training
Throughout the school year, Centervillle Elementary and Centerville Junior-Senior High conduct practice drills during the school day to ensure that everyone is familiar with their roles and responsibilities. Both campuses have identified secondary sites and reunification (student pickup) procedures in case it becomes necessary to evacuate school premises.

What to Expect if a Safety Situation Occurs

If a safey situation occurs, Centerville ISD may use parent letters, ParentSquare notifications, and the district website. It is very important to make sure that Centerville ISD has the most current phone number, email, and information about those allowed to pick up your student.

Parents are urged to stay home and await instructions from the district anytime SRP-based protective measures are being utilized to ensure the safety and security of students and staff.

During a Secure or Lockdown, traffic routes around the school must remain clear to allow for arriving first responders. Both of these SRP-based actions can result in an increase in police presence as the circumstances are investigated. In addition, no one is allowed in or out of a Centerville ISD facility during a Secure or Lockdown.

Evacuate, Shelter, and Hold actions are typically resolved in a very short amount of time once a hazard has passed or has been determined to be a non-issue.

ParentSquare is the district’s primary notification system. We ask that if you haven’t done so already, please register your ParentSquare account. For more information on ParentSquare and how to register, please see our website page – ParentSquare.

SRP Actions

The SRP is not based on specific scenarios but on how a response to any given situation will affect the overall risk. The SRP's standard language is essential because it helps to ensure that everyone involved in a school emergency is coordinated and understands each other. The SRP includes five actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. These steps will be followed in a predictable order as an incident unfolds. Each action has its own specific set of staff and student directives that are specific to that action.

HOLD

Hold is issued to quickly clear all hallways. Students and staff remain in their classroom or current area, and school business continues as usual. A Hold may be called during a medical emergency, an urgent maintenance issue or any situation requiring cleared hallways.

Parents: Please do not come to the school. The Hold incidents are being resolved quickly, and students will typically be back in their normal bell schedules within minutes.

SECURE

Secure is set in motion when an indirect hazard exists outside the building. Secure uses the physical facility to provide protection. The school continues to operate as usual, with staff and students brought in from the outside and perimeter doors secured. No movement occurs in or out of the school facility.

Parents: Please wait for updates from Centerville ISD through regular communication channels. Please do not come to the school, as the school will be in Secure mode.

LOCKDOWN

Lockdown occurs when there is a danger or threat inside the building. Interior security features are used to protect staff and students inside the school. All classroom doors are closed, and everyone is silent. The lights are turned off to make everyone more hidden. Barricading of doors and self-evacuation may also occur during a period of lockdown.

Parents: Please wait for updates from Centerville ISD through normal communication channels. Please do not come to the school during a lockdown.

EVACUATE

Evacuate occurs when students and staff must leave the building. Students and staff are calmly transitioned to predetermined evacuation assembly points. For hazards other than fire, the type of hazard and special instructions are announced.

Parents: Wait for updates from Centerville ISD via normal communication channels.  Please do not come to the school, as most evacuations are short-term with students immediately returning to the building following a brief period of time to evaluate the hazard.  If parent reunifications are required, parents will be notified of the reunification location via normal Centerville ISD communications channels. NOTE: Parents or guardians must bring a valid government-issued photo ID to any Centerville ISD reunification site.

SHELTER

Shelter occurs when protection is necessary against incidents such as tornados or hazardous materials. Shelter actions vary by hazard, & may include: severe weather (transition to pre-designated shelter areas), or hazmat (close doors/windows, turn off HVAC systems).

Parents: Please wait for updates from Centerville ISD through normal communication channels.

Please do not visit the school in the event that we are experiencing a shelter incident. If an evacuation is required following a sheltering incident and a parent reunion is required, the parent reunion location will be reported through normal Centerville ISD communication channels. Parents or guardians must bring a valid government-issued photo ID to any Centerville ISD reunion site in order to reunite with their child or ward. Make sure the school has up-to-date phone numbers and contact information for people who are authorized to pick up your child.
